The Art Of Film Title Design Throughout Cinema History

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari Title Card

One of my favorite title card designs

Silent film fans understand the importance of title card design. Sometimes title cards support, sometimes they distract, but they are always key in a silent film. Like everything else about silent movies, title cards were an evolving form. Just as narrative forms in movies evolved, so too did the art and science of creating title cards. I’ve always found title cards to be an interesting off shoot in the study of silent movies.

For your Saturday reading edification, I came across this piece at Smashing Magazine on the evolution of title designs, “The Art of Film Title Design Throughout Cinema History.”  It’s a basic overview but comprehensive time-wise, moving from the silent movie title card to title sequence design in contemporary films. Give it a read and let me know your thoughts on title design.
